Design Research - Fashion retail
Together with two of my program fellows, we explored possible future innovations in the fashion industry. Our work was grounded with the mission of XRC Labs, a retail incubator, that has partnered with Parsons School of Design.
PROJECT _ Integrative Studio 1// WHERE _ Parsons School of Design // WHEN _ January to May 2017 // KEYWORDS _ UX research, insights, ideation, conceptualization, user testing
We want to explore how the changing landscape of big data, AI, VR and visual sorting algorithms can break down barriers between manufacturers and retailers, retailers and customers, and create responsible and sustainable changes. Consumption patterns have drastically changed over the last 15 years. The fashion industry is the 2nd most polluting industry in the world and generates material waste in all processes akin to no other industries. How might we leverage emerging technologies to transform the shopping experience in order to reduce waste through personalization in the fashion industry?
There is no one size fits all bra. So bringing in our knowledge of garment knitting machines, 3D body scanning, fully recycled yarns, and the desire we heard for personalization, we decided thought of designing a solution that would bring together all these aspects. We leverage 3D body scanning, full garment knitting technology, and yarns to create perfectly fitting bras. We created the Bra Project.
Physical experience_ Consumers are willing to partake in body scanning to ensure better fitting clothing. How might a retailers customize garments specifically to a consumers body help lower both consumption and waste?
Digital experience_ Millennials believe that AI and VR could and should enhance their experience. How might we enhance the shopping experience through VR fitting and a visual sorting algorithm to reduce waste?
Consumption_ There is a growing concern among millennials toward conscious consumption. How might technology help with the traceability and certification of sustainability labeling in the fashion industry?
Prototyping & Testing
Experience prototype: Workshop of 7 women to navigate the website, 3D scanning and feel with the material and visual design of bra.
Product prototype: Physical product prototype, hand-machine knit prototype, pattern - knit from white nylon/elastine.
Tech prototype: Short video of 3D boobs animation with bra virtual prototype.
